RESUMO

Plasmonic nanozymes bring enticing prospects for catalytic sterilization by leveraging plasmon-engendered hot electrons. However, the interface between plasmons and nanozymes as the mandatory path of hot electrons receives little attention, and the mechanisms of plasmonic nanozymes still remain to be elucidated. Herein, a plasmonic carbon-dot nanozyme (FeCG) is developed by electrostatically assembling catalytic iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) with plasmonic gold nanorods. The energy harvesting and hot-electron migration are remarkably expedited by a spontaneous organic-inorganic heterointerface holding a Fermi level-induced interfacial electric field. The accumulated hot electrons are then fully utilized by conductive Fe-CDs to boost enzymatic catalysis toward overproduced reactive oxygen species. By synergizing with localized heating from hot-electron decay, FeCG achieves rapid and potent disinfection with an antibacterial efficiency of 99.6% on Escherichia coli within 5 min and is also effective (94.2%) against Staphylococcus aureus. Our work presents crucial insights into the organic-inorganic heterointerface in advanced plasmonic biocidal nanozymes.

RESUMO

Osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation involves grafting of natural hyaline cartilage and supporting subchondral bone into the cartilage defect area to restore its biomechanical and tissue structure. However, differences in biomechanical properties and donor-host matching may impair the integration of articular cartilage (AC). This study analyzed the biomechanical properties of the AC in different regions of different sites of the knee joint and provided a novel approach to OCA transplantation. Intact stifle joints from skeletally mature pigs were collected from a local abattoir less than 8 h after slaughter. OCAs were collected from different regions of the joints. The patella and the tibial plateau were divided into medial and lateral regions, while the trochlea and femoral condyle were divided into six regions. The OCAs were analyzed and compared for Young's modulus, the compressive modulus, and cartilage thickness. Young's modulus, cartilage thickness, and compressive modulus of OCA were significantly different in different regions of the joints. A negative correlation was observed between Young's modulus and the proportion of the subchondral bone (r = - 0.4241, P < 0.0001). Cartilage thickness was positively correlated with Young's modulus (r = 0.4473, P < 0.0001) and the compressive modulus (r = 0.3678, P < 0.0001). During OCA transplantation, OCAs should be transplanted in the same regions, or at the closest possible regions to maintain consistency of the biomechanical properties and cartilage thickness of the donor and recipient, to ensure smooth integration with the surrounding tissue. A 7 mm depth achieved a higher Young's modulus, and may represent the ideal length.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The current clinical pulse lavage technique for flushing fresh osteochondral allografts (OCAs) to remove immunogenic elements from the subchondral bone is ineffective. This study aimed to identify the optimal method for removing immunogenic elements from OCAs. METHODS: We examined five methods for the physical removal of immunogenic elements from OCAs from the femoral condyle of porcine knees. We distributed the OCAs randomly into the following seven groups: (1) control, (2) saline, (3) ultrasound, (4) vortex vibration (VV), (5) low-pulse lavage (LPL), (6) high-pulse lavage (HPL), and (7) high-speed centrifugation (HSC). OCAs were evaluated using weight measurement, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), macroscopic and histological evaluation, DNA quantification, and chondrocyte activity testing. Additionally, the subchondral bone was zoned to assess the bone marrow and nucleated cell contents. One-way ANOVA and paired two-tailed Student's t-test are used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Histological evaluation and DNA quantification showed no significant reduction in marrow elements compared to the control group after the OCAs were treated with saline, ultrasound, or VV treatments; however, there was a significant reduction in marrow elements after LPL, HPL, and HSC treatments. Furthermore, HSC more effectively reduced the marrow elements of OCAs in the middle and deep zones compared with LPL (p < 0.0001) and HPL (p < 0.0001). Macroscopic evaluation revealed a significant reduction in blood, lipid, and marrow elements in the subchondral bone after HSC. Micro-CT, histological analyses, and chondrocyte viability results showed that HSC did not damage the subchondral bone and cartilage; however, LPL and HPL may damage the subchondral bone. CONCLUSION: HSC may play an important role in decreasing immunogenicity and therefore potentially increasing the success of OCA transplantation.

RESUMO

Iodine and thyroid hormones (TH) transport in the placenta are essential for fetal growth and development, but there is little research focus on the human placenta. The research aimed to investigate iodine and TH transport mechanisms in the human placenta. The placenta was collected from sixty healthy pregnant women. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), serum iodine concentration (SIC), placenta iodine storage (PIS) and the concentration of serum and placenta TH were examined. Five pregnant women were selected as insufficient intake (II), adequate intake (AI) and above requirements intake (ARI) groups. Localisation/expression of placental sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) and Pendrin were also studied. Results showed that PIS positively correlated with the UIC (R = 0·58, P < 0·001) and SIC (R = 0·55, P < 0·001), and PIS was higher in the ARI group than that in the AI group (P = 0·017). NIS in the ARI group was higher than that in the AI group on the maternal side of the placenta (P < 0·05). NIS in the II group was higher than that in the AI group on the fetal side (P < 0·05). In the II group, NIS on the fetal side was higher than on the maternal side (P < 0·05). Pendrin was higher in the II group than in the AI group on the maternal side (P < 0·05). Free triiodothyronine (r = 0·44, P = 0·0067) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (r = 0·75, P < 0·001) between maternal and fetal side is positively correlated. This study suggests that maternal iodine intake changes the expression of NIS and Pendrin, thereby affecting PIS. Serum TH levels were not correlated with placental TH levels.

RESUMO

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) can be formed during the production of chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Detection and accurate quantification of PCDD/Fs in CPs are challenging because of their matrix complexity. Therefore, the occurrence and formation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs from CPs have not been studied extensively in the past. In this study, 15 commercial samples including solid and liquid CPs were collected in 2022 from China. The average ΣSCCP concentrations detected in the solid and liquid CPs were 158 and 137 mg/g, respectively. The average International Toxic Equivalent (I-TEQ) values of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/F in solid and liquid CPs were 15.8 pg I-TEQ/g and 15.0 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. The solid and liquid CPs had different predominant congener groups for SCCPs and PCDD/Fs. Possible formation routes for the generation of PCDD/Fs were analyzed by screening precursors in paraffin and laboratory-scale thermochemical experiments of CPs. The transformation between 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs was recognized by calculating the successive chlorination preference. The first reported occurrence of PCDD/Fs in CP commercial products indicated that exposure to CPs and downstream products might be an assignable source of PCDD/F emission, which is of great significance to further explore the control factors of PCDD/Fs in the whole life cycle of CPs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and global trends in the surgical treatment of articular cartilage defects. METHODS: Studies in English published between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2020 were retrieved from MEDLINE, WOS, INSPEC, SCIELO, KJD, and RSCI on the "Web of Science." Patient data were extracted, including age, sex, defect location and laterality, duration of follow-up and symptoms, and body mass index (BMI). Data were further stratified according to the surgical method, lesion location, procedural type and geographical area, and time period. A comparative analysis was performed. RESULTS: Overall, 443 studies involving 26,854 patients (mean age, 35.25 years; men, 60.5%) were included. The mean lesion size and patient BMI were 3.51 cm2 and 25.61 kg/m2, respectively. Cartilage defects at the knees, talus, and hips affected 20,850 (77.64%), 3,983 (14.83%), and 1,425 (5.31%) patients, respectively. The numbers of patients who underwent autologous chondrocyte implantation, arthroscopic debridement/chondroplasty, osteochondral allograft (OCA), osteochondral autologous transplantation, and microfracture were 7,114 (26.49%), 5,056 (18.83%), 3,942 (14.68%), 3,766 (14.02%), and 2,835 (10.56%), respectively. European patients were the most numerous and youngest. North American patients had the largest defects. The number of patients increased from 305 in 2001 to 3,017 in 2020. In the last 5 years, the frequency of OCAs showed a greatly increasing trend. CONCLUSION: Clinical characteristics and global trends in the surgical treatment of articular cartilage defects were revealed. The choice of operation should be based on the patient characteristics and defect location, size, and shape, as well as the patient's preference.

RESUMO

South China Mountain Region has a well-developed water system with the most abundant water in China. Untreated natural water is the main source of drinking water for the local people. This study aimed to investigate the hydrochemical characteristics and trace element concentrations of natural water in the mountainous regions of South China. In this study, 116 water samples were collected. Traditional hydrochemical methods, water quality index (WQI), hazard index (HI), and nutrient speciation of trace elements (NSTE) were used for analysis. In general, the hydrochemical type was mainly Ca-HCO3- type. The hydrochemical characteristics were mainly influenced by the weathering of calcite and silicate rocks. Overall total dissolved solids (TDS) were low, indicating mainly soft and very soft water. The water that met the standards for mineral water had an average concentration of 59.69 mg/L for Sr (strontium) and an average concentration of 0.46 mg/L for H2SiO3 (silicic acid). Although the water quality index (WQI) indicated that 91.3% of the water samples in the study area were of good quality (WQI < 25), 2.58% of the water samples had significant non-carcinogenic risk (HI > 1) due to the high As and Pb concentrations. The water in the study area contributed significantly to human intake of Sr, Cr, and V, accounting for 8.4, 8.3, and 7.7% of the required daily intake for adults, respectively. It is recommended that a comprehensive water quality evaluation system be constructed to ensure that mountain water is managed for development and safe to drink.

RESUMO

Iodine is an essential trace element for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which play an important role in growth and development, metabolism, and body organ function. There is no iodine-specific food frequency questionnaire (I-FFQ) for pregnant women in China. This study aimed to validate and optimize an I-FFQ. A total of 1802 pregnant women were included in this study. The iodine nutrition survey was performed using I-FFQ and 3-day estimated food diary (3DEFD). Seventy-one women of reproductive age repeated the I-FFQ twice to assess for FFQ reproducibility. Further optimization of the I-FFQ was accomplished by integrating iodine contributions to simplified questionnaire items. Correlation and Bland-Altman analyses were used to verify the consistency of I-FFQ with 3DEFD, as well as the stability and feasibility of I-FFQ optimization. The I-FFQ and 3DEFD had a strong correlation (R = 0.76, P < .001) and agreement (Kappa = 0.731, P < .001). A Bland-Altman plot showed that 5.1% of participants exceeded the limit of agreement. Nonpregnant women of reproductive age completed the I-FFQ twice, and the results had a strong correlation (R = 0.72, P < .001). A Bland-Altman analysis showed that 5.6% of individuals were located outside the limit of agreement. The consistency of I-FFQ before and after optimization was good (Kappa = 0.982, P < .001). Therefore, I-FFQ could be used as a valid tool to estimate iodine intake among Chinese pregnant women. The optimized I-FFQ could shorten survey time without affecting its accuracy.

RESUMO

Background: Osteochondral allograft transplantation (OCA) treats symptomatic focal cartilage defects with satisfactory clinical results. Purpose: To comprehensively analyze the characteristics and clinical outcomes of OCA for treating articular cartilage defects. Study Design: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: We searched Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Database, and Web of Science for studies published between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2020, on OCA for treating articular cartilage defects. Publication information, patient data, osteochondral allograft storage details, and clinical outcomes were extracted to conduct a comprehensive summative analysis. Results: In total, 105 studies involving 5952 patients were included. The annual reported number of patients treated with OCA increased from 69 in 2001 to 1065 in 2020, peaking at 1504 cases in 2018. Most studies (90.1%) were performed in the United States. The mean age at surgery was 34.2 years, and 60.8% of patients were male and had a mean body mass index of 26.7 kg/m2. The mean lesion area was 5.05 cm2, the mean follow-up duration was 54.39 months, the mean graft size was 6.85 cm2, and the number of grafts per patient was 54.7. The failure rate after OCA was 18.8%, and 83.1% of patients reported satisfactory results. Allograft survival rates at 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years were 94%, 87.9%, 80%, 73%, 55%, and 59.4%, respectively. OCA was mainly performed on the knee (88.9%). The most common diagnosis in the knee was osteochondritis dissecans (37.9%), and the most common defect location was the medial femoral condyle (52%). The most common concomitant procedures were high tibial osteotomy (28.4%) and meniscal allograft transplantation (24.7%). After OCA failure, 54.7% of patients underwent revision with primary total knee arthroplasty. Conclusion: The annual reported number of patients who underwent OCA showed a significant upward trend, especially from 2016 to 2020. Patients receiving OCA were predominantly young male adults with a high body mass index. OCA was more established for knee cartilage than an injury at other sites, and its best indication was osteochondritis dissecans. This analysis demonstrated satisfactory long-term postoperative outcomes.

RESUMO

CdS, with a noncentrosymmetric structure, is thought as an important electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite-based devices, but its pyroelectric effect, which can efficiently modulate the optoelectronic processes, is not well explored. In this work, a MAPbI3 heterojunction of CdS/MAPbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD with a c-axis preferred oxygen-doped CdS ETL is developed as a high-performance photodetector (PD). This PD exhibits a stable self-powered property in the spectral range of ∼360-780 nm due to its excellent photovoltaic effect. Moreover, the light-induced pyroelectric potential in the CdS ETL is demonstrated to be an efficient approach for improving the photoresponses, and different effects are observed for different laser irradiations, which can be well understood from their working mechanisms. Upon 450 nm laser irradiation, the photovoltage responsivity (R) is greatly improved from 596.9 to 6383.6 V/W with an increment of 1069.54%. In addition, the response spectrum is also extended outside the bandgap restriction of the MAPbI3 to 1550 nm due to both the pyroelectric and photothermoelectric effects, which is a big breakthrough for the perovskite heterojunction PD. Through turning the external bias voltage and ambient temperature, the coupling mechanisms of the pyroelectric and photovoltaic effects are further analyzed. This work provides an important understanding of designing the CdS ETL-based perovskite heterojunction for broadband high-performance photoelectric devices by introducing the pyroelectric effect.

RESUMO

Pseudorabies (PR) is an acute and severe infectious disease caused by pseudorabies virus (PRV). Once the virus infects pigs, it is difficult to eliminate, resulting in major economic losses to the global pig industry. In addition, reports of human infection with PRV suggest that the virus is a potential threat to human health; thus, its significance to public health should be considered. In this paper, the anti-PRV activities of emodin in vitro and in vivo, and its mechanism of action were studied. The results showed that emodin inhibited the proliferation of PRV in PK15 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 0.127 mg/mL and a selection index of 5.52. The addition of emodin at different stages of viral infection showed that emodin inhibited intracellular replication. Emodin significantly inhibited the expression of the IE180, EP0, UL29, UL44, US6, and UL27 genes of PRV within 48 h. Emodin also significantly inhibited the expression of PRV gB and gD proteins. The molecular docking results suggested that emodin might form hydrogen bonds with PRV gB and gD proteins and affect the structure of viral proteins. Emodin effectively inhibited the apoptosis induced by PRV infection. Moreover, emodin showed a good protective effect on PRV-infected mice. During the experimental period, all the control PRV-infected mice died resulting in a survival rate of 0%, while the survival rate of emodin-treated mice was 28.5%. Emodin also significantly inhibited the replication of PRV in the heart, liver, brain, kidneys and lungs of mice and alleviated tissue and organ damage caused by PRV infection. Emodin was able to combat viral infection by regulating the levels of the cytokines TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-4 in the sera of infected mice. These results indicate that emodin has good anti-PRV activity in vitro and in vivo, and is expected to be a new agent for the prevention and control of PRV infection.

RESUMO

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC), a rare and low-grade malignant skin tumor, is characterized by a high rate of misdiagnosis and a preponderance for local recurrence, but seldom seen nodal or distant metastasis. Although MAC typically occurs almost in the head and neck region, primary eyelid or orbital MAC is very rare. To explore the unique characteristics of the eyelid and orbital MAC, we reviewed the relevant literature. Based on its distinctive anatomical location and the aggressive behavior, eyelid or orbital MAC not only exhibit a high rate of misdiagnosis and local recurrence, but also lead to serious complications such as disfigurement after orbital exenteration, paranasal sinuses or intracranial invasion, even death. Misdiagnosis of MAC commonly result from its rarity and nonspecific clinical and histopathological presentation. To reduce or avoid misdiagnosis, it is important to increase awareness for MAC and obtain a full-thickness biopsy specimen in histopathological analysis. Due to its extensive invasive growth pattern, MAC has a high rate of local recurrence, so complete excision with clear margins and long-term follow-up of patients with MAC are necessary. About those serious complications of the eyelid and orbital MAC, early and accurate diagnosis, complete excision is very important. Moreover, an interprofessional team consisting of ophthalmologist, otolaryngologist, neurologist, dermatologist, pathologist, radiologist is needed to evaluate and treat this disease. In summary, increasing awareness, early and accurate diagnosis, complete excision, long-term follow-up, and a multidisciplinary team is crucial for management of the eyelid and orbital MAC.

RESUMO

Luteolin from Patrinia villosa exhibits strong antiviral activity. Here, the conditions for extracting and enriching luteolin from P. villosa were optimized. Response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal extraction parameters in terms of reflux time, solvent ratio, extraction temperature, material-to-liquid ratio, and number of extractions. Thereafter, a macroporous resin method was used to enrich luteolin from P. villosa. Finally, the following optimal extraction and enrichment conditions were established: an extraction time of 43.00 min, a methanol/hydrochloric acid solvent ratio of 13:1, an extraction temperature of 77.60 °C, a material/liquid ratio of 1:22, and a total of two extractions. NKA-9 was determined to be the most appropriate resin for enrichment. The ideal adsorption conditions were as follows: a pH of 5.0, a temperature of 25 °C, an initial luteolin concentration of 19.58 µg/mL, a sample loading volume of 2.9 BV, and a sample loading rate of 2 BV/h. The ideal desorption conditions were as follows: distilled water, 30% ethanol and 80% ethanol elution, and 5 BV at a flow rate of 2 BV/h. After optimization, the enrichment recovery rate was 80.06% and the luteolin content increased 3.8-fold. Additionally, the enriched product exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on PRV (Porcine pseudorabies virus) in vitro and in vivo, providing data for developing and applying luteolin from P. villosa.

RESUMO

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) belongs to the family Herpesviridae. PRV has a wide host range and can cause cytopathic effects (CPEs) in PK-15 cells. Therefore, PRV was used as a model to study the antiviral activity of piceatannol. The results showed that piceatannol could restrain PRV multiplication in PK-15 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 0.0307 mg/mL, and the selectivity index (SI, CC50/IC50) was 3.68. Piceatannol could exert an anti-PRV effect by reducing the transcription level of viral genes, inhibiting PRV-induced apoptosis and elevating the levels of IL-4, TNF-α and IFN-γ in the serum of mice. Animal experiments showed that piceatannol could delay the onset of disease, reduce the viral load in the brain and kidney and reduce the pathological changes in the tissues and organs of the mice to improve the survival rate of the mice (14.3%). Therefore, the anti-PRV activity of piceatannol in vivo and in vitro was systematically evaluated in this study to provide scientific data for developing a new alternative measure for controlling PRV infection.

RESUMO

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sandwich biosensors have received tremendous attention in early diagnosis of bacterial infections. However, efficiently engineering nanoscale plasmonic hots pots (HS) towards ultrasensitive SERS detection still remains challenging. Herein, we propose a bioinspired synergistic HS engineering strategy to construct ultrasensitive SERS sandwich bacterial sensor (named USSB), by coupling bioinspired signal module and plasmonic enrichment module to synergistically boost the number and intensity of HS. The bioinspired signal module is based on dendritic mesoporous silica nanocarrier (DMSN) loaded with plasmonic nanoparticles and SERS tag, while magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with Au shell are employed in plasmonic enrichment module. We demonstrate that DMSN effectively shrank nanogaps between plasmonic nanoparticles to improve HS intensity. Meanwhile, plasmonic enrichment module contributed to plenty of additional HS inside and outside individual "sandwich". Ascribing to the boosted number and intensity of HS, the constructed USSB sensor exhibits ultrahigh detection sensitivity (7 CFU/mL) and selectivity towards model pathogenic bacteria of Staphylococcus aureus. Remarkably, the USSB sensor enables fast and accurate bacterial detection in real blood samples of septic mice, achieving early diagnosis of bacterial sepsis. The proposed bioinspired synergistic HS engineering strategy opens up a new direction for constructing ultrasensitive SERS sandwich biosensors, and may promote their advancing applications in the early diagnosis and prognosis of devastating diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Our previous studies have demonstrated the mechanical effect of sclerosis around screw paths on the healing of femoral neck fractures (FNF) after internal fixation. Furthermore, we discussed the possibility of using bioceramic nails (BNs) to prevent sclerosis. However, all these studies were conducted under static conditions as the patient was standing on one leg, while the effect of the stress generated during movement is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress and displacement under dynamic stress loading conditions. METHODS: Two types of internal fixation, namely cannulated screws and bioceramic nails, were utilized in conjunction with various finite element models of the femur. These models included the femoral neck fracture healing model, the femoral neck fracture model, and the sclerosis around screws model. The resulting stress and displacement were analyzed by applying the contact forces associated with the most demanding activities during gait, including walking, standing, and knee bending. The present study establishes a comprehensive framework for investigating the biomechanical properties of internal fixation devices in the context of femoral fractures. RESULTS: The stress at the top of the femoral head in the sclerotic model was increased by roughly 15 MPa during the knee bend and walking phases and by about 30 MPa during the standing phase compared to the healing model. The area of high stress at the top of the femoral head was increased during the sclerotic model's walking and standing phases. Additionally, the stress distribution throughout the dynamic gait cycle was comparable before and after the removal of internal fixations following the healing of the FNF. The overall stress distribution of the entire fractured femoral model was lower and more evenly distributed in all combinations of internal fixation. Furthermore, the internal fixation stress concentration was lower when more BNs were used. In the fractured model with three cannulated screws (CSs), however, the majority of the stress was concentrated around the ends of the fractures. The maximal stress in the healing model with one CS and two BNs was the highest at all stages of gait over three combinations of internal fixation, and the stress was mainly carried by CS. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of sclerosis around screw paths increases the risk of femoral head necrosis. Removal of CS has little effect on the mechanics of the femur after healing of the FNF. BNs have several advantages over conventional CSs after FNF. Replacing all internal fixations with BNs after the healing of FNF may solve the problem of sclerosis formation around CSs to improve bone reconstruction owing to their bioactivity.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the incidence of knee donor -site morbidity after autologous osteochondral mosaicplasty. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, EMbase, Wanfang Medical Network, and CNKI databases from January 2010 to April 20, 2021. Relevant literature was selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were evaluated and extracted. The correlation between the number and size of transplanted osteochondral columns and donor-site morbidity was analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 13 literatures were included, comprising a total of 661 patients. Statistical analysis revealed an incidence of knee donor-site morbidity at 8.6% (57/661), with knee pain being the most common complaint, accounting for 4.2%(28/661). There was no significant correlation between the number of osteochondral columns and postoperative donor-site incidence (P=0.424, N=10), nor between the diameter size of osteochondral columns and postoperative donor-site incidence(P=0.699, N=7). CONCLUSION: Autologous osteochondral mosaicplasty is associated with a considerable incidence of knee donor-site morbidity, with knee pain being the most frequent complaint. There is no apparent correlation between donor-site incidence and the number and size of transplanted osteochondral columns. Donors should be informed about the potential risks.

RESUMO

Heterohelicenes are of increasing importance in the fields of materials science, molecular recognition, and asymmetric catalysis. However, enantioselective construction of these molecules, especially by organocatalytic methods, is challenging, and few methods are available. In this study, we synthesize enantioenriched 1-(3-indol)-quino[n]helicenes through chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed Povarov reaction followed by oxidative aromatization. The method has a broad substrate scope and offers rapid access to an array of chiral quinohelicenes with enantioselectivities up to 99%. Additionally, the photochemical and electrochemical properties of selected quinohelicenes are explored.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Few iodine balance studies have been conducted in school-age children. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct an iodine balance study in school-age children. METHODS: We measured daily iodine intake, excretion, and retention for 3 consecutive days without any dietary interventions in school-age children. Linear mixed-effects models were used to fit the relationship between total iodine intake and iodine retention. RESULTS: 29 children aged 7-12 years (mean age 10.2 ± 1.4 years) with normal thyroid function and thyroid volume were recruited. The 0 balance value (iodine intake = iodine excretion, iodine retention = 0 µg/day) shifted with iodine intake in an iodine sufficient population. The 0 balance value for school-age children with an iodine intake of 235 (133, 401) µg/day is 164 µg/day. Children aged 7-12 years with iodine intake >400 µg/day were almost all in a positive iodine state. CONCLUSION: An iodine intake of 235 (133, 401) µg/day for children aged 7-10 years achieved a 0 balance value of 164 µg/day. Long-term iodine intake of >400 µg/day is not recommended.

RESUMO

Ensuring optimal iodine nutrition in pregnant women is a global public health concern. However, there is no direct data on safe tolerable upper intake levels (ULs) for pregnant women. A cross-sectional study was performed to determine the ULs of pregnant women. A total of 744 pregnant women were enrolled in this study. The median (IQR) urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in pregnant women was 150.2 (87.6, 268.0) µg/L, and the urinary iodine excretion (UIE) over 24 h was 204.2 (116.0, 387.0) µg/day. Compared with those with a UIE figure of between 150-250 µg/day, the reference group, the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 5.7 times higher (95%CI: 1.7, 19.2) in pregnant women with a UIE figure of between 450-550 µg/day, and 3.9 times higher (95%CI: 1.5, 10.3) in pregnant women with a UIE figure of ≥550 µg/day. Compared with an estimated iodine intake (EII) of between 100-200 µg/day, the reference group, the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 4.3 times higher (95%CI: 1.3, 14.4) in pregnant women with a UIE figure of between 500-600 µg/day, and 3.6 times higher (95%CI: 1.5, 8.9) in pregnant women with UIE of ≥600 µg/day. In general, our cross-sectional study found that excessive iodine intake during pregnancy appears to directly increase the risk of thyroid dysfunction. Avoiding chronic iodine intakes of 500 µg/day or higher or having a UIE figure of ≥450 µg/day is recommended for pregnant women in China.
